Thanks to xoxobaby for her editing help!
Below are the guidelines for successful posting on this forum.
1) NEWBIES: Please read the main forum and FAQ thoroughly before posting questions. Also read Mary Erickson's Q&A page. Most of us skim through postings and skip those we know have already been answered in FAQ. This allows us time to give more thoughtful responses to new questions. Please remember that no one is paid to contribute to this forum, so any and all assistance you may receive may be attributed only to time and expertise *generously* volunteered by our members.
2) Although some mentor-type relationships have developed with promising rookies on the board, participating doesn't constitute a formal mentor/protege arrangement, or any professional affiliation with our senior members and administrators. If you would like to request the guidance of a mentor with whom you may be able to form a more formal relationship, go to www.makeupmentors.com.
3) We are happy to be able to share our knowledge with newcomers. When MUA's at all levels work at a top tier level of quality, it gives ALL of us more credibility and career opportunities. However, no amount of technical guidance can substitute for your own hard work. There is no magic wand, product, or magic tip/technique. We have all learned from the ground up, and paid some hard (sometimes laughable) dues. If what you really desire is accelerated, personalized training in professional makeup artistry, we encourage you to hire one of us for expert private guidance and technical training.
4) Speaking of training, many of us have attended workshops and schools all over the country/world. If
you read through this forum, FAQ, and Mary's Q&A page, you will glean important information about others' experiences with specific workshops, schools and teachers. If, after reading these links, you decide you need more specific help, ask. Because we are not affiliated with any specific educational organization, you can look forward to objective input.
5) Forum Etiquette - In order that we may maintain a high standard of professional courtesy and general
positivity, it is essential that you read and follow the guidelines for forum etiquette. Because we insist on adherance to these these guidelines, we are able to invite you into a safe, reliably honest, and happy environment.
6) It's recommended that you hang out and read the board a bit. This will give you a peek into the writing styles and personalities behind our regular posters. Because one of the most valuable learning tools we have via this board is a forum for HONEST, constructive critiques, it could be easy for sensitive newcomers to misinterpret someone's helpful honesty for more hurtful criticism. That's simply not the case! If you stick around, you'll see that we have wonderfully kind, well-intentioned, though sometimes brutally frank, A-level artists here who are very generous with their insight and with pointers to help you grow.
7) This forum is intended to be a supportive environment for all visitors and members. To protect you and all our members, we strictly enforce standards of common courtesy. We will edit posts, and if need be, ban
offenders. We do not allow flame wars or trolls. We run a tight ship and simply do not tolerate comments which are intentionally inflammatory, defamatory, accusatory or otherwise hostile. That in mind, please be polite when posting. If you feel a little heated, it may be a good idea to take a few deep breaths and proofread your post before hitting the "add reply" button! If you feel you may have mis-spoken at any point, rest assured. We deeply respect those who are mature enough to apologize publicly... and if necessary, reform their errant ways, of course.
8 ) Clear concise communication will yield clear, concise USEFUL feedback. Keep in mind that if we aren't sure what you're asking, we may supply a less effective answer, or none at all.
9) Internet posting etiquette applies here as well! Please, REFRAIN FROM POSTING IN ALL CAPS, as that signifies shouting! This is a fun, yet professional forum, so proper spelling and grammar considerations apply as well.
10) Remember that this is not a private forum. While there may seem only to be a modest-sized group of regular posters, there are dozens upon dozens of invisible "lurkers". Among them are models, photographers, magazine editors, cosmetic company executives, and other artists, many of whom work in the top tiers of the business. The way you represent yourself here can impact your reputation at all levels of the industry and across the country. Many of our senior members have made invaluable "connections" and benefited from career-making opportunities as a result of their presence in this forum. Remember, the manner in which you represent yourself -positively or negatively- is your choice, and your responsibility entirely.
Many thanks for your contributions to the growth of this forum. We look forward to your helpful presence and positive input. We would like to extend to you a very warm welcome!
