just to clarify....each hurricane is a seperate individual, I know who 2 of them are for sure, I have spoken with them in the past...I assume Emelle knows who the 3rd one is....Each Hurricane has a seperate IP address... I think you all know that Emelle and I won't allow anony posters here with anything negative to say unless we know who they are. In this case they are are real people, not competing school admin. Only under extreme cases (where retribution a clear threat) will we allow anony posters....so if you have feedback you want to share as a hurricane name please contact Emelle first before you post so she knows you are not a competing school or a dual poster.

I know two of them also, but I don't know if it's the same two!
It doesn't matter to me really, because all this feedback so far is well within the scope of what I've heard about them before from a variety of sources. Trust me, directly or indirectly, I've gotten feedback from dozens of people who've had interactions with them on some level, and none were positive. "EmElle"

It is funny...... I always ask myself, "is it me?" After reading everyone's posts, I know it is not me.
Thank goodness for this message board, because I feel a little better. I would have felt a lot better had I chose another school. |

Hello Everyone I feel that maybe i have a huge piece of the puzzle everyone is wondering about ,,,
I used to be a HUGE part of this so called Dawn til dusk ,, coming from another city to attend this school was one of the hardest things to do but when i began i found myself at home for a while ,, everyone i was metting was so cool very sweet and overall the connections were great especialy being a new kid on the block. After completing the course i was invited to be a asst. this is when it all came together.. (or i should say fell apart) I saw scam after scam and i couldnt quite understand how it was all happening .. I saw artist after artist get harrased and not paid the amount they were promised ,, I FOR one became one who was short changed about 2000 dollars of my time worked because my time card was LOST !! Bull s**t I honestly could go on and on about this program but i feel that maybe if i was asked the questions i would give you more details ,, lets just say ,, i am very happy that i did get the theory but I felt like i was hired to do the demonstration of what ms dawn could not do. AS for the girls that couldnt do lashes after you graduated ,, I am sorry you didnt learn what you paid for. GOD i really could go on and on because i sit here typing away my memory is more usefull if i could just display it like a gallery of the tales of a desperate school... There is a lot of money goin in and its not going anywhere else but into some random vacations to Disney... DTD sorry for the put out but you did F**k me over !! I think i am safe here so for those that know me ,, Im sure you know that it was sad to see me get thrown out by her husband ,, THAT DAY was a mess and I cried myself back home with a huge question on my mind of HOW DID I GET HERE? For those that need some advice to find a school .. DO YOUR best to investigate and please please please ask questions.... EmELLe == to also clarify ,, those huricanes are REAL because I know them personaly and they are honest people trying to get a little more understanding of what we ALL experienced... |

Have you had to deal with harassment by Russ? Or even threats?
And I'm curious about how many times private family or health issues came up so that Dawn wouldn't have to teach, or Russ wouldn't have to deal with someone. "EmElle"

I think the forum ate my post! I'm reposting.
I am saddened to see this thread, but am not surprised after everything Ive heard over the past year. I don't visit here often and never thought I would post again. I'm not a message board fan and I am under the impression that the admin here are not fond of schools in general. I am affiliated with a makeup school, and I have personally met with a few former students from Dawn til Dusk. Some are seeking to become better educated. By the time they are properly educated I think most figure out just how lacking their education was at Dawn til Dusk. This is the feedback I have received. I've heard stories of double charging on credit cards, substituted instructors with recent new grads, last minute cancelled classes, and a strong belief that Dawn didnt have a clue as to what she was doing. When seeking jobs, they found they were ill-prepared for this tough business. When they tried to get promises fulfilled from Dawn or her administrator husband, they were harassed and threatened, or offered product to make them go away. Being part of a school, I would never encourage anyone to post on a message board about their experiences with a school. When the stories started circulating I did a little research and this wasnt hard because the NY area used to be my stomping ground. Ive met the actual makeup department head of the Sally Jessy Raphael show, I used to work with some of the same crew, as a matter of fact, the Department head was nominated for an Emmy one of the years Dawn claims to have been the head artist there, so what does one make of that? I also contacted the Maury show to verify Dawns employment there. She may have been a day player, but has never worked on Maury himself from what I understand. The first time I called, they didnt even remember Dawn. If students are taken in based on lies and I believe they are, where does this leave the students? I have heard though never seen with my own eyes that their school website used to have stolen photos, is this just rumor? lets hope so, maybe someone here can enlighten me about that. I happen to be talking to one of these former students a couple of weeks ago about this very subject. She was assisting me on a commercial. She told me that she met with a couple other former students from her class at Dawn til Dusk, and they all had similar issues. They decided to talk to an attorney to see what could be done. She asked me if I could help her find other former students. They have set up an email account for students to contact them to see if they are interested in joining in or just to help with gathering information. The email is dtdmakeup@yahoo.com. Right now, I think there are 8 to 10 students involved in this case. I put out the word to others I knew (whose contact info I still had) and now I share this with you. She stressed keeping track of harrassing phone calls and emails, write the time and date down, this is all information the attorney wants. Get the calls on tape if you can, it's best not to answer the phone so you can get everything said on tape. This will help the case, according to what her attorney told her. Even if you didn't get harassed, document everything that did happen, and when. I know I shouldn't get involved, given my position in this industry. But I really care about our students and I hate to see anyone get hurt. |

Don't worry, I don't think this will die. I'm not even sure this thread will die. However, should this thread lose steam, it will certainly end up in FAQ. It's already in Google searches. But clearly Mary and I aren't the only ones interested in seeing justice done. In fact, if anyone has any legal proceedings going on, either criminal or civil, we'd love to assist any way we can.
Back to TB for a moment... you aren't the only one who has called or written to the Maury show to verify her status. I have as well as several others. We keep getting the same answers. The stolen photos were real too. In fact, the last of them came down last December (2004), after I called them out on it publically and privately. I personally got very tired of the constant harassment by phone and email. Lucky for Russ, I have the messages on tape, as well as all the emails he ever sent. And he is well aware that he even attempts to contact me in any way, this falls into FBI territory, because it is harassment (and possibly stalking) that crosses state borders. Since I informed him of this last December, he's left me alone. It's very tempting to leave him be to wallow in his own personal hell he's created for himself and his family, but I can't knowing that others are STILL being hurt. Two years ago this month is when Russ initiated contact with us to harass us. Had he never done that, we may still be blissfully unaware of his existence in this world. Part of me is tempted to wish to be a fly on the wall of his brain, but I'm afraid I might get stuck. "EmElle"

Well, I'm not sure what convinced you to attend the school, but if her resume was a selling factor, there may be grounds for a criminal or civil action based on fraud. If you came there expecting to learn something, and you didn't learn it, there may be a case there as well. If you saw any or all the stolen photos and that was your selling point, thinking either that Dawn had done them, or that you were going to come out of there being able to do the same things, that might also be a case.
For one or two students to attempt some sort of action may be seen as being disgruntled and therefore ignored by lawyers or police. Having several to many students will start to show a pattern and get someone's attention. I'm curious for more info on TB's post. Maybe I need to re-post that email address in TB's post since s/he didn't provide it as a link: dtdmakeup@yahoo.com I know of one student who was looking for a very specific program of study, and Russ promised her she'd be "certified" in that field when she was done. Turns out that field is and has never been a part of the Dawn til Dusk curriculum. She paid her money, took the class, and never learned anything she was promised she'd learn. I'd love for her to come forward. I'm sure there are dozens more just like her. Failure for people to come forward to stop Dawn and Russ means that more students will get taken. I don't know how the laws read in New Jersey or the other states they've taught classes in. I don't know that this isn't in fact a federal case. But people have to come forward to actually pursue it. People have to stop thinking "Well, it's behind me know, lesson learned. I just won't refer anyone to them." That won't get this stopped. "EmElle"

At the time, DTD was close and condusive to my schedule.
They are listed on the Better Business Bureau as a Motivational/Training Business. (They did neither.) Maybe that is why they have Tony Robbins' quotes on their website. As far as others coming forward, I think they are scarred that the harrassment will start. To spend all that money and receive absolutely nothing is beyond frustrating. |

The harassment will start if they are likely identifiable - that is if they go public on this or other sites with information that is unique only to them. Going to a lawyer identifies no one until they want to be identified.
However, I have learned that Russ has a healthy respect for the police. So should the harassment start, the police are a quick phone call away. What's a few threatening phone calls and a bad day compared to being able to stop these people from hurting countless others? Think either in terms of the short term or the big picture. Which is better in the long run? I looked them up on the BBB just now. Nine complaints, six in the past 12 months. One unresolved, two not responded to. That's just not right. It's a shame that more people aren't looking this school up on sites like these before spending their money. "EmElle"

TurbidBlue,
No one here is against makeup schools or programs. They just know the facts that most people don't get what they paid for... However, there are many legit schools and programs that have been around for many years - and the students coming from them are prepared to at least assist. I think the issue is that a person could assist and learn without going through a program, and that the certificate earned doesn't guarantee you anything in this industry. I went through a 4.5 month program at Columbia College in Chicago (no longer available...). I had classes in basic, media, clinical, theatrical and the business of artistry. I learned more in my two night business class, than in my months of clinical and theatrical put together. But my basic and media courses were amazing. I got my first gigs because I had connections. And my first retail gigs came about because the counter manager for trend at Nordstrom knew I was training to do makeup. No one has ever asked for my certificate (I am still proud I have it...), and people are actually more interested in the fact that I have a bachelor's degree and that I took some graduate classes in marketing. I think that's the whole point. Does Crystal Wright have a great program? Yes. Does Tobi Britton? Yes. Are there others, like MUDD and Westmore that can prepare you to begin working in the industry? Yes. However, there are also scam programs that have sullied the good names of smaller, independant programs. So don't be afraid to post who you work for... No one here will hold it against you, but I understand if you are trying to keep your name safe from those who are harassing people. Rachael
