if any of you want to share your own experiences about schools and you feel more comfortable not naming names feel free to post about your experience without naming the school. This would serve as a warning to people looking into schools, it will help them know what to look for. Wouldnt it have been nice if someone had warned you?

Now that I think about it she never did do a demonstration, and I hated those coloring books...they did nothing for me! But she did have a portfolio of her work out for the students to see.

so why would an instructor have a book to show students in class and not a portfolio on line to bring in students?

Well since you say so Mary,
I would like to share my experience with a school a attended. I must say before I give the bad reveiws that they were very helpful in helping me enroll. Also, since I left the school I have been getting daily emails on a few gigs (which may not be very helpful as they are mostly lo/no pay). And the instructor there Merielle (can't remember her last name) was very helpful. Anyhow, now for the bad. While I was there, the kit I had to pay for which was included in the tuition (and you could bring your own kit too) was consisted of old makeup. The products had that old smell as if they had them a long time. The worst part about the products were I noticed when I used them on the other students in the class their were small spots of blood on their faces almost as if someone sticked them with a pin. The first time it happened I just thought I was seeing doubles but then it kept on happening. I realised then that it was the powder we were using so I went to the instructor and informed her of my findings and they changed the powder (apparently that was a new powder that they had just gotten) Well I tried the new powder and it never happened again. Also, what you see on the internet is not necessarily what you get. Because they tell you that once you do a look you can get your pictures taken with a nice professional look and that they have a studio. Well let me tell you it was just another 4x4 room with a photo light. there were no backgrounds available, the instructor took the pictures and I don't need to tell you about the quality. It was hard for me because I didn't have the luxury of going to the different schools to inspect thier facilities, so if you can always inspect what you are going to pay for. Oh by the way, I did get free coffee everyday Anyhow, the school I am referring to is Cinema Makeup school Dee |

Are you sure you saw her work?......I remember seeing a small photo album with no pictures of her work...... On the wall, were pictures of her husband done up in Drag make-up.......that's all I ever saw.........
Just a picture of her and Maury Povich........ I do remember seeing an extensive portfolio of someone who worked for them and this instructor had an online portfolio, and was really the only one who taught me anything...... |

None of MUD's instructors have their work online, but they will show you in class. However, I agree that it should be readily available for the out-of-towners to see before making that investment.
I'm curious as to what Dawn's pictures looked like. I've heard rumors about her beginnings, and the real truth about her resume. 14,000 makeovers in 5 years is not only false, but impossible! "EmElle"

I had 2 f/x teachers who were awesome and had portfolios, and I actually learned alot from them despite not having the space or equiptment to do anything other than wounds, bald caps, burns, etc. They were great!

I was spammed by them through Mary Ericksons site. I recieved and email saying I should tak eher classes they were closer, cheaper and just as good as Tobi Britton. NOT.
I think I may have been the last student they taught before they made their changes (requiring you to use only their make up, selling you a kit instead of letting you use your own, charging for the photo sessions, overcharging etc.). I went there. I had a one on one. I too thought Dawn was really sweet. I did not have problems with multiple charges or anything like that. Most of what she taught I learned in esthetics school. I had very little hands on. When I left I still couldn't put a fake lash on to save my life. The main reason chose her school is because it was close to home and I figured with the practice makes perfect sessions I would get lots of practice. NOT So it was not worth the money for me. After "graduation" she called me the day before to do a job for the Maury Show. She needed an answer right away and call time was 8am in NYC. I told her I had to make child care arrangements because it was last minute. She called me back a few minuteand said she found someone. I think this was a bogus job but in a practice makes perfect session she told the other girls she called me for a job. I introduced a photographer friend of mine to them. He did a before after photo session. He worked with them for a bit then they fired him. I never saw her book, never saw her use a brush. She lost complete credibility with me when she stood in front of a group of stuendents and said what she teaches is the best way to do make up an deverything else is bullshit. they spammed you from my makeupmentor site? I have heard this before....people have lied and signed up for an account on my mentor site so that they can find potential students and spam them....I wish I could stop this practice, when I do find out about it I usually go out with an email to the entire list asking people NOT to give their business to people that would do this.
IF anyone ever gets a spam they think may have come from my mentor site PLEASE let me know so I can go out with a follow up to everyone there. www.TheMakeupArtist.Com

I liked a few of the instructors also...... | #31 | ||

I think there were quite a few good instructors who have come and gone,,,,,,,,,I was an intern for 2 instructors who showed me the ropes on a film set, Got me work in photography, and supported my career.
Some of the teachers that Dawn had freelancing for her worked hard to do a good job, and maybe they got caught up in the same difficulties we are having as students..... Would like to hear from them??????? Wonder why they are all so quiet????????? |

Quote: Yeah Mary I didn't realize how she found me at first. It wasn't until you sent the email out saying that someone had been banned from your site for spamming that I knew it was her. It's all good though. Because of this board I have gotten a phenominal mentoring group. In the last seven months I have had the opportunity to work with three really awesome artists from this board. I can say with certainty that being mentored by working artists is so much more beneficial than anything a school can offer you. "The only difference between a Rut and a Grave is the depth"

The mentoring site has grown so large with well over 1000 artists that I can no longer monitor the people signing up but a warning to anyone that intends to spam this list....
The minute I find out I will go out with an email asking everyone on the site (every member, well over 1000) to please boycott the spammer. Unethical business that lie to get email address should not stay in business and I will do my part in making sure they get less of it. www.TheMakeupArtist.Com

As far as Dawn doing a makeover she did do one while I was there and well lets just say I wasn't too impressed but then again I thought I wasn't too experienced so I could'nt judge. |

Former student too!
Sounds like we all had the same experience. Many students in my class had problems with them re-charging their credit cards. If it was one or two, you could over look it but six!?! The ones that complained, Dawn's husband shut them up with make-up. That make-up was horrible by the way. It is sad when you learn more from the free classes and guess what, Dawn didn't teach those. What does that say?! They had some very talented instructors, but they can't seem to keep their staff. No wonder why they have complaints on the Better Business Bureau. I wanted to take the Media course, because that instructor was very talented. She probably isn't with them anymore, because no seems to last. |

I think people are liking being able to anonymously post their feedback, and yeah, three hurricanes. One inspires another, apparently. Plus, I'm sure that former students have been pointed here. A lot of recent feedback I've gotten is that each one of these students thought they were isolated, and not part of a trend. I think they are liking the fact that they are not alone and are in fact part of a group.
If it were any other school, with any other administration, I'd probably insist on straight names, but I understand these students not wanting to have to deal with harrassing phone calls at all hours of the day or night. I hope those students who got back back their $2k in overcharged tuition, got $2k worth of makeup. "EmElle"

You never know who is on these websites, and I have seen how Dawn's husband was with the instructors that stood up for themselves and the students that complained, so I'm happy that I can use a different name.
