If people have stories I suggest taking them to PM and not posting.

I think if people have had problems with a school, any school, it should be okay to post. Potential students need to know what they could face. We had a whole thread on a particular instructor at MUD, which is still in FAQ btw. We've had threads about various workshops, like DinAir, Fred Segal and Stylezone. Despite a less than obvious bias* from this board administration against this school, this school should not be spared a useful feedback thread for fear of board DRAMA. I think we can all agree to post useful feedback while demonstrating restraint... otherwise it's not very useful.
* this bias is obvious only to certain people here and those who have paid real close attention to various posts made on the public board. "EmElle"

I wasn't really thinking about "sparing" DTD. I was think more in terms of reprocussions for the board. But c'est la vie, c'est la guerre.

What reprocussions? I can't be sued for others genuine opinions, and I am not the thought police.

Why don't you start first Zelda. You are an ex- student, what's your issue?

As tempting as it may be, I doubt that anyone here is going to openly discuss explosives and how to make them. But in line with freedom of expression, it is why I have these cute little graphics.

Not sure where to start........ | #11

They are all lovey dovey when you're there, but as soon as you suppossedly graduate from the program then you're DUST.... They won't answer your emails,,,,,,they won't return your phone calls, aren't concerned about product replacement, and they never sent me the certificate(that probably isn't worth the paper that it's printed on) That's just for starters.....Multiple credit card billings was also an issue..... I could go on,,,,but I would really like to know about any other experiences? |

You said it ... "Dawn to DUST"! I don't mean to make light of your plight ... I just think that it might be a more appropriate name for them.
Don't worry about the "certificate". You are right ... no certificate from any school means anything, anyway in this biz. What counts is what you can do ... your work ... and your ability to market yourself well. No one has been very forthcoming about DTD and their experiences there yet (fear of reprisal?) but from what I've read and heard, it seems that there is a big problem there. I can't give specifics, because it's all hearsay ... but your story is not that different than some of the things I've heard. |

well, I'll be general here and just address my comments to include all schools....
1) if a school takes your money and doesnt hold the class they promised you are due a refund....No, you do not have to fly to some other place to take the class...if the one you paid for has been cancelled and the school doesnt refund your money promptly, go see the district atty....and let people know here so that others are not taken by this sort of scam and yes it is a scam when a school cancells a class and asks you to fly somewhere or wait to take it. 2) If you see a double charge or anything odd on your credit card, contact the district atty, its a scam and not an "accident" not when it happens to lots of people. 3) Certificates are useless and anyone that tells you you need one is useless 4) Schools usually charge at least double for the kit they sell you. If you buy a kit on your own as an artist you will save 50% or more. 5) If a school administrator ever threatens you or calls your home in the middle of the night, call the police, file a report and then call the DA, there may be others in the same boat. 6) Its not a good idea to pay a school for photography and models unless you have proof that they are consistantly good and giving portfolio worthy prints...this is just another way for these scam schools to make money 7) You should post your experiences and if others before you would have done so you may not have been taken. 8) if an instructor doesnt have an online portfolio I would ask myself 'WHY?" It could be that their entire career is bogus. 9) never believe testimonials, you have no clue if they are real or not. www.TheMakeupArtist.Com

I don't personally know anyone who went to DTD, but I have only heard negative things about them "through the grapevine".
I have heard of scare tactics against other artists who train, and have heard that in the past they were using images on their site that didn't "belong" to them... I can't back any of this up, so basically it's hearsay. Unfortunately, I believe the hearsay... I would even imagine that I might be getting some nasty e-mails for posting any less than positive info, as that is another m.o. that I have heard through the grapevine. I do also understand that they were teaching a class in Chicago this past week, so I would imagine that I will be hearing more from newbies in my area. I will update if I do. |

From what I heard..... | #15

I heard from a new X student that the unsuspecting instructor who first took the media program to San Fran was unjustly fired(better off for her), and that DUST no longer has anyone to teach in Chicago.

I am a former student of DTD. I loved the beauty portion of the classes. Dawn is an excellent teacher and an awesome person. But I had a problem with them making promises that they never did. For example, they offered me a $200.00 gift certificate for having my image picked as the spotlight in Makeup Artist magazine. When it came time to redeem that they never sent the product after I sent them many emails. I have nothing against the school but like zelda said they seem to just ignore you after you've gone home. They answered my emails but never fell through on what they said they were going to do.

Dawn til Dust...... | #18

Dancing Queen............You might have had a decent experience with "Dust",,,,,but considering the turnover rate of students and staff,,,,,,,,,there are bound to be a few who came away without any damage. But I think the majority are discontent in one way or another.
Not sure who contacted you, but it seems as if the Instructors,Photographers, Web Designers, Assistants, etc.......all have some sort of beef with them. You must have natural talent..........Stay Creative, and safe.... |

Lindsay is a natural talent, and is one of the best students to come out of that school. It's a shame she's in Utah, of all places.
Lindsay, I've heard from several students that Dawn never once did a demonstration on a human face. Did she ever show you how to do something? I keep hearing that all she teaches is theory, and that the students then struggle to translate from the coloring book to the human face. What was your experience with that? As to them not following through with you, that might be why they seemed to have disowned you on their website. You pestered them too much, and now they don't even recognize you as one of their former students. You made them look good while your images were up. Now all they have is crap to show for their student work. Did you ever see Dawn's portfolio? "EmElle"

Emelle, seeing someones portfolio and reading someones resume means nothing....if the portfolio isnt on line you have no idea whose photos are in there. Thats why I always harp about seeing portfolios on line...if they are not on line what does the artist have to hide? I can excuse it if they dont have a website but a teacher with a website certainly should showing their work.
again, I am being general here this could be any school I'm writing about here I found photos a friend of mine in SD did the makeup on..on an East Coast schools website, I then did research on the other good shots on the schools site and they were all stolen, mostly from the internet. So really you can't even believe some of the stuff you see on sites. www.TheMakeupArtist.Com
