I think almost everyone knows me here but for the newbies.... I'm Mary www.themakeupartist.com and www.camerareadycosmetics.com is my store... I have been a moderator here since day one (or maybe day 2) I work full time in the industry, I do makeup, hair and wardrobe styling. I have clients that I have had for years and only take on very few new ones now and then...my store keeps my crazy busy.
After 25 years or so in this business I'm a bit cynical at times but I love watching artists grow and I've seen a lot of artists grow into amazing artists since I have been here.... www.CameraReadyCosmetics.com

Hey everybody! I'm Aziza from Tampa FL *waves* I'm new to the business and I'll be finishing up my BA in psych in a semester or so. My family is pushing me to go to grad school, but in all honesty, makeup is what I love. I've finally found my niche! 20 years from now, I'd hate to look back and regret not taking this chance. The fam doesn't understand it, but in the end it's my life. So, like some of ya'll, I'll be juggling a 9-5 while trying to test my butt off lol My eventual goal is to move back to NYC to assist and take as many workshops possible. Tampa is a wasteland ya'll!
Anyhoo I've been hanging around these parts for about a year and a half now, mainly reading and chipping in here and there. I feel like I already know everyone even though I don't chat much! Please believe that I stalk everyones port of a daily basis I'm a nut for musicals, magazines, and all types of dance. I sing along to the "Rent" soundtrack at least twice a week to my SO's horror This board has been such an incredible asset. I've avoided many of the mistakes newbies tend to make and it's all because of the info that's so readily shared here *Aziza* aziza.walker@gmail.com |

Re: Intro Thread - Who Is Ya? | #25 | ||

Ooooh! I was so excited to get on the board and read all of this...Its been a little dead around here lately!
So hi everyone I started doing makeup on myself at 13 to make me look like Marilyn Monroe. I am still obsessed with her to this day...and added to that list is Jean Harlow, Joan Crawford, Marlene Dietrich, Barbra Streisand, Liza, Peggy Moffitt, Marisa Berenson, Twiggy.....ok, this list can get long. I really just love looking at creativity, especially on a womans face When I was 19 I started working at Lancome, 2 yrs later I started with MAC, 5 yrs later I finally realized that it was time to get my book together and make a leap. I started the powder room here in Cleveland, but unfortunately my ex-business partner stole everything I created and pushed me out of it. So I am back to sqare one..... But I am more focused than ever....I have spent quite a bit getting my book together as of late and have lots on new pictures that I am really excited about. Also determined to get new clients, save money for a year, and make the move I should have made years ago. I have learned so much here, and I sincerely thank every contributor to the forum over the years Thanks again, Erin (who is changing her screen name very soon!) |

Big shock here, I'm Kristen. I'm in Massachusetts and I'm a total noob to the business. I had worked for years in retail management and decided I didn't want to become the world's oldest mallrat. I went to cosmo school and gravitated towards makeup which led me to makeup school. I graduated exactly a year ago today, so I'm officially no longer a rookie. I've been reading the board since the spring but I didn't sign up until sometime this summer.
I'm pretty much a "full time" part time artist. I'm on an extended leave from my "regular" job due to an illness in the family. The silver lining is that it is much easier to accept freelance work, as it's easier to get things covered at home than at work. I've been working in print and film, trying to get a portfolio and a reel in order, networking my butt off, and trying to learn all I can. |

Hi all- I'm Kim Reyes, yet another DC area artist and have been on the board ever since Heather Fox told me about it
I'm trying to work full-time and it's getting progressively busier- I do alot of corporate headshots, videos, commercials and magazine shoots. I have loved makeup since age 15, am self-taught and have done makeup application part-time all along until taking workshops/classes the last 5 years or so (Suzanne Patterson, Tobi Britton...) and picking up INCREDIBLE knowledge from this forum!!!! My latest love is body painting! I don't post often because I am also a ceramic and jewelry artist and am usually in the studio- but I am trying to be more vocal on the board. Thank you to everyone who has answered my questions in the past and future!!! Kim Reyes

Hi Folks,
I am Susan Donoghue. I think that I've been here since 2002, but I'm not sure. Found out about this board while interning for Tobi Britton, and I'm so grateful to everyone on here who has helped me learn so much! I am a freelance make up artist in NYC. Still relatively new to this industry, I am getting some work, but not as much as I'd like! Always in the process of updating my book and developing new skills, I look forward to meeting more members of this wonderful community. |

Hey Tania, I think maybe it's not a bad idea for the vets to introduce themselves. I think there's a thread from us like this in FAQ, actually, so the changes in what's said could be interesting. And, maybe it would draw out more newbies to respond. Like we don't know them, they don't know us!
I'm thinking of my "intro". Wasn't sure if I wanted to be funny, corny, or serious. "EmElle"

Hi all !
I'm Sylvia, another lurking newbie who finally shows up I think I read this board for over 2 years now but I was too shy to post anything (and I had nothing to show anyway lol) but I learned so much just by reading you all... At least I wanted to thank you all for sharing your experience and all the good info on here. As Sophie said I think I learned more on here than at school. Thanks to you all again (sorry for my english I hope it's not too bad x_x) (another reason why I was only lurking) |

Hi my name is Robyn aka Byrd, I am from NY but live in Los Angeles. Started getting interested in make-up back in my punk rock days but didn't actually start doing it until 4 or 5 years ago. I work in film and tv, mainly in LA but occassionally in ATL and New York. I am a big fan of cuts and bruises LOL.
In addition to make-up I am a writer (just completed my first novel which is being edited) and a jewelry designer, which keeps my bills paid when make-up is slow. I love this board and although I don't comment much I have learned a great deal over the last 4 years. Robyn

Hey all..
I'm Diana... I've been doin' makeup and hair for 24 years. I'm currently based in Toronto, Canada but have had the good fortune to live and work in several cities around the world. I work mostly in print fashion and advertising but have, on occasion, worked on some video as well. Though I love working on creative fashion and beauty, I'm most proud of the work I do with Dove's 'Campaign For Real Beauty' and my Dove 'Evolution' video which won two Grand Prix awards at the prestigious Cannes Lions International Advertising Festival. Looking forward to reading more 'introductions' both from our long time members as well as the newbies! |

Hey everyone,
I'm Monique from Amsterdam. I've been in this business for almost 20 years, doing both makeup and hair for print advertising and tv. Been on this board for about 3 years I think. I'm not even sure but it seems a lot longer than that. I've had a steady thing going at our national tv network here in the Netherlands for about 6 years. At the same time I'm working on my book (again) because my first love, print makeup, is beckoning again. I never should have let it go like I did in the first place, but hey you live and learn. I sometimes feel like a newbie all over again, having to start from scratch almost literally. But, I have a new editorial coming out in the December issue of Celebrity Magazine, and I'm excited about that! This board and the people here, have taught me so much, and I wish I had something like this around when I started out. I still read and re-read the FAQ from time to time and I STILL find stuff I didn't know. So, welcome to all the new people here! Enjoy the wealth of information that is right here at your fingertips, and use it wisely. I wish you all a wonderful and creatively satisfying career! Monique Heijboer

Hey All,
I'm Megan (clearly...) and I've been lurking/posting on here for...eeek- a long time. I'm located in Montreal, Canada-best city in the world- and have been into makeup for as long as I can remember. I've drifted in and out of the business, did a cruise ship stint as a makeup artist, salon work, and freelance wedding and print work. I've also worked in a ton of other careers while doing all this...let's just say makeup has been the one constant in my life for 5 years now. I read this board every day I think and even though I rarely post, and don't know anyone personally, I can picture the old pros voices and personalities in my head:em, tania, mary, as if they were all personal mentors. You guys do all of us noobs, confused, unmotivated beginners a huge service by keeping this place filled with real advice, great tips, and....whatever else we ask for. Best forum on the web. By far. Welcome to all newbies! Megan |
