Do you all have any tips on curling lashes that grow straight down?
I heated the curler and tried everything. But just could not get them to curl at the outer corners.

This has never happened to me before but I had a very hard time curling this model's lashes. Nothing seemed to work.

maybe you could have tried a strip of false but natural looking lashes. then curled the two together, coated with mascara..let dry, then curl again. and being very careful when pulling the curler away from the eyes so the lashes don't stick to it.
another possibility for this particualr photo would have been to focus on brows, skin, lips and completely skipped the lashes and eyeshadow...her nose and lips are so pretty, but her eyes are blah |

I have straight lashes and have had models with the same and have found the Shu Umera curler VERY helpful as compared to any regular eyelash curler.
Also if I really need staying power I'll take the Japonesque mini heated lash curler out AFTER I curl with the Shu Umera and run it up the lashes (holding it for a second while pushing up with finger). I'll let it cool off for a sec then I'll put one coat of mascara on. I let it fully dry before doing another as if it's too wet n heavy it'll start to droop faster. P.S. I use a fan brush for the mascara which I can control the amount of and "heaviness" factor. |

are you getting really close to the lashline when you curl? that is the hardest part, but as long as you move slow and carefully (ie. don't pinch with abanson!) you will get good results.
if you use waterproof mascara, the curl will also hold much longer. applying regular mascara to curled lashes is like getting your hair wet after you have curled it. waterproof mascara is like applying hairspray to hold the curl. (make sure you have a nice remover nice shu uemura cleansing oil or jojoba oil to remove). you know when you part your hair on the wrong side, and you get lift at the roots? the same concept can be applied to lashes. apply mascara up and towards the inner eye (not the way they fall naturally) -- this will give them a lot of lift as well. if you do the three things above the lashes will pop! hth! |

i use this heated curler on all hard lashes.. including myself. I'm chinese so my lashes uncurl very easily with humidity and many brands of mascara just like a lot of hard lashed clients and models.
for super stubborn lashes, curl first with a regular curler while you're heating up the heated lash curler, start at the base, then make small steps outward crimping possible 2 more times. once you finish both eyes, set and secure the curve with the heated curler. this method will work even in humid environment for stubborn lashes. hope this helps, Melissa! |

I'm asian as well and I have stick straight lashes that grow downwards. It practically takes an act of god to curl them really well, not criss cross and then stay curled after mascara.
A few things that I do is use a really great eye lash curler. My favorite is Kevyn Aucoin's but the new improved Shu Uemura curler that just came out is nearly identical. The Shiseido one is great as well. All three of these lash curlers may look like the rest of the run of the mill curlers but they are not as rounded/curved as others so that they capture all the lashes from corner to corner even if you have Asian or almond shaped eyes. I also use a corner lash curler which helps get a nice curl on the outer and inner lashes which are the toughest to curl. I know this is a big no-no with a lot of people but it's the one thing that works best for me. I use water proof mascara and once it's completely dry I give my lashes one more curl with the full lash curler. I've never pulled any lashes doing this but this is the only way I can get my lashes to curl upwards rather than straight out. Another thing I do is use just an outer 1/3 of a lash strip or the knot-free clumps on the outer half but rather than glue them above the lash line I do it underneath. It helps to lift the natural lashes and actually looks more natural this way. Just tightline with liner underneath the lash line to finish. Tiffany |

Hi Melissa,
I have straight lashes too but curl them with a lash curler. I don't heat them up or anything and sometimes i don't use mascara. mine pretty much stay curled without mascara unless i cry or use eyedrops or something. It could be in my method of curl. I pretty much just walk the curler from root to tip...it usually takes two goes. But waterproof mascara is the best to keep a curl (which has been mentioned), i think its bc waterproof mascara is dryer and it just dries much faster.Non waterproof mascara is wetter and takes ages to dry which is why it uncurls the lashes that you curl. Hope this helps |

I'm lash curler challenged. I could not manage to curl lashes to save my life.
Even the small Japonesque one that curls corners doesn't work on me or anyone else I've used it on for more than 5 seconds. And don't even get me started on those other scary contraptions. Heated curlers? been there, done that. Lose the curl within a minute. Besides, clients are afraid of it, and find it way too hot near their eyes. Can't blame them to tell the truth. I'm getting lashes to behave (more or less) by applying lots of coats of mascara while pushing the wand way into the roots and upwards. AFter this thread I'm probably gonna try again though. Thanx for sharing the tips. Monique Heijboer
