Hi all,
I tried to do a search but couldn't find anything. I just wanted to know any recommendations on what you think an artist would/should wear to work. Does it change depending on whether its bridal, television or fashion shoot, or does that not matter?

Also I just wanted to know what your opinions were in regards to what would be considered appropriate or inappropriate? eg. no runners, open-toed shoes ok or a no-go, hair must be pulled back & etc..

I personally thought that an artist can be as creative as they want to be or is it best to be conservative?

I just wanted to know what people have experienced in terms of how they've presented themselves.

When shooting corporate, I never wear denim or any kind, runners, open toe shoes or too much jewelry.

When on set for fashion or advertising I wear whatever is comfortable yet still stylish and professional. For these shoots I'll often wear slides etc. for easy removal when walking on sets.

For summer location shoots I'll wear capris, tanks and flip flops.

One thing I never do, and this has nothing to do with clothing, is wear perfume or paint my nails with a coloured enamel. They are always painted clear so it's obvious to anyone I'm working on that my nails are clean.
I wear my hair up or down depending on how I feel on the day but never touch it when working on someone. If I do need to touch it, my face or anything else, I use a wipe on my hands before continuing.

agree with what blushun said..

and i never wear any tops that are too short that will show my belly when i raise my arms..

also wear fairly safe pants or throw a belt on pants so there's no plumber crack on display.. (not that i walk around with a plumber crack any other time..

)

absolutely no perfume when i work that's my rule, and no jewellery that might touch clients face..

i just go by what's clean and respectful to my client and comfortable for me at the same time. i agree as an artist you can express your artistic side, but i doubt any of my corporate client wants to see me dressed in anything too 'out there' according to their standards, or makeup that is 'too' creative according to their standards.

Hi Mai!

If I'm shooting on a film set, particularly if its in a studio, I always wear black. This way I disappear into the background easily, and I'm never in a line of sight for the talent.
If its a location shoot, its usually according to the weather, but NEVER dressy, or something that draws attention to yourself. Neat, but annonymous.And SAFE, comfortable footwear! My hair is often in a ponytail, and basic makeup. But that's film, I can't offer advise for fashion shoots.

Hope you're settling into Brisbane...we'll have to catch up some time!

Thanks Blushun for the detailed response.

I guess it looks like i was on the right track.Basically I've been wearing all black for all my makeup gigs. My hair has always been pulled back and my makeup has always been conservative and very natural looking. I wear simple jewellery that doesn't get in anyones way. I guess I just try to look neat and clean....

I just basically had a place criticise that I had 'no makeup' on....But the thing is I did, but as I said very natural...of course they didn't tell me that direct...I found out from someone.

Liz-Plumbers crack...thats funny but very important :lol2

Well that's very odd. I only wear a bit of concealer and gloss on set unless I'm doing a t.v. interview or on stage representing a line and even then it's the most minimal application I can get away with.
I personally get nervous when an assistant shows up wearing too much makeup. :dunno

That's mad. Do you know how many hairdressers I've seen who are in dire need of a haircut/style? Or a mechanic's car that needs a service?

I don't think you can go wrong with neat, tidy, and perhaps a little conservative.

I'd be frightened if the onset makeup artist turned up looking like a macbot!

Liz & Mandy-i forgot to thank you two ladies for your responses...

That is so true about hairdressers and mechanics. I can think of other industries...

I've never had an issue with anyone else regarding the way i look,this was an unusual case

I have been seen wearing a headband and pigtails with no makeup on set before... Usually this happens after about 5 hours of running around and getting over-heated.

Most of the time my hair is in a ponytail with my bangs twisted and off my face. My makeup is almost always minimal, unless I am working in a "public" or performance type setting. Most of the time, no one cares what my makeup looks like - unless there is something seriously wrong with it.

I wear Dansko, flip-flops or Crocs depending on the environment I am working in (during the summer months I wear cute sandals if I am in a retail environment or at an event).

I almost ALWAYS wear black. It's really all I own these days. I am trying to change that for summer, but we'll see. And I do wear a lot of loose and flowing pants, so that I can stay comfortable. It is always safer to wear a tunic-length top so your coin-slot doesn't show...

I think it's important to look "presentable", but that's a subjective and situational term.

That's exactly my favorite outfit when I work :goofy

hehehe you're funny! :lol

Now seriously ... you can see me wearing just very plain clothing. I don't use any dirty clothing, with holes or showing belly. I don't like tattooes nor piercings or bright hair color on myself. Black is the predominant color on my closet, followed by brown and navy - I like dark colors for the slimming effect.

I think I know how to present myself depending of the occasion and the job. I don't smoke. I do like to use some light eau de toilette, and never had any complains about it. My hair is kept out of my face. My fingernails are usually short with some clear nail polish so I try to look always clean. I love to wear crocs in dark colors and they are a treasure to my feet.

Ah! and my makeup is light and natural ... :sun

And I'm soooo glad I'm a non-smoker....It must be awful to have smokey breath and fingers being a makeup artist. I think I'd puke if a smoker got that close to me....unless it was Brad Pitt, then I'd make an exception...

Gosh it looks like I'm on the right track even with the makeup artists on the other side of pacific ocean...

I'm assuming most besides from Mandy are either from Canada or US.

But its good to see what we are wearing...I wonder what other artists wear as well...

As a fashion/wardrobe stylist in Los Angeles ... I do pretty much the same.

Minimal makeup, simple easy hair ... for a very practical reason ... I steam clothes and it's hot and sweaty work not to mention all the physical requirements.

If I'm on location, I wear what is appropriate for that location ... beach is shorts or capris and flip flops, a hotel is usually nice pants/jeans and a covered up top, the mountains ...jeans, layers for the changing weather and sturdy shoes that I can hike in. Never anything sexy or contrived.

In the studio, I usually wear black or dark jeans with a black or other dark top. There is an old ''rule" that photographers are sometimes still sensitive about: crew wears dark clothes so they don't reflect light when they are standing near the model on set and therefore don't created a light reflection. White. light or brignt colors sometimes create a problem. So I"m pretty sure that is why it's become customary for the crew to wear black and that seems to now apply in fashion shows, tv shows, etc. If I'm working with photographers that I know really well and I know that they don't care, then I'm not as strict about black and I just go for comfort.

I don't wear jewelry, accessories, etc. because they just get in the way. My only nod to "bling" is sometimes a cool shoe ... but that is usually either a sneaker or something that I can slip out of quickly for stepping on to the set and it's always comfortable, first and foremost. I think that all of us tend to suffer back pain by the end of a full day on our feet, bending and leaning a lot.

I'm in Amsterdam and do mainly TV and print work.

For me it's usually casual wear, which is what I wear when I'm not working also.
The rules are: no cleavage, no midriff and no exposed armpits not even in a heatwave. Nothing too tight and definately nothing torn or dirty. Comfortable shoes with low heels. No sneakers.
Nothing too hip or trendy, jeans are fine unless I'm doing corporate. Then it's black slacks, shirt/t-shirt and a jacket and maybe a tiny heel. Sometimes TV requires all black too.

Hair: I have long hair and at work it's either up or in a pony tail
Face: Loads of mascara, touche éclat and tinted lipbalm.
Jewelry: nothing on my hands or arms, just hoop earrings and a simple silver necklace.
I wear a good deodorant and a bit of light eau de toilette behind my ears. Never on my wrists. People often tell me I smell good so they do notice. I switch scents every few days to make sure I don't overload.
I have short 2-tone acrylic nails that I maintain every 10 days. My nails are a mess if I leave them to their own devices, because I wash my hands about 40 times a day.

I am in NY, but worked in the midwest for over 10 years doing TV, print, and bridal. I hope it is ok that I post being so new...

For TV work in exterior locations, I wear very utilitarian, typical crew clothes. Most sets I have worked on do not let you wear flip flops or slides because of safety, so I tend to wear flat shoes that buckle or tie.

For TV or film work in interior or exterior locations I wear closed toe shoes that have a soft, quiet sole. In the same regard, I never wear jewelry that jingles or makes any noise to affect sound.

I will dress more fashionably for editorial or corporate jobs. Cute outfits and shoes.

I don't wear a lot of make-up, but I do wear a lot of mascara, and wear my hair down unless it is very hot.

For weddings, I always dress up. Heels, tea dress, etc. I just find that I end up in the photos a lot, and it reflects the price that I am charging.

I hardly ever wear black. I have dark hair, and it gives me horrible memories of that counter that I worked at back in the day.

Funny thing. I worked on this very corporate shoot one day and the stylist (who was repped by Celestine) was wearing some very expensive trendy hip hugger jeans on set. Everytime she bent down to fix the model's hem she gave the rest of us a showing of her butt crack. The crew was mostly made up of guys! I was so embarassed for her!!! Early on I was guilty of an on-set fashion no no and I learned quickly that is not the way to be taken seriously or get paid on time. lol!

A while back I worked on a shoot taking place in October on the coast in Britain with pretty much all exterior shots.

Two of the art department girls were very trendy dressers and spent the week in vintage gear - which looked cool at the beginning but after spending an hour tramping around the building site we were filming on in the rain and mud they looked very ridiculous compared to the rest of the crew who were all in waterproof trousers, hiking boots and gore-tex jackets.

You definitely have to dress for your comfort and safety - I tend to make more of an effort for pre-production meetings (and wrap parties - if there was a cute camera assistant!

)

I like to be neat but anonymous too! Don't forget though, if you are going to be out of town with the crew for any length of time, make sure you pack things that do have a bit of your personality to them, for your own sanity!! I mean after the set is closed for the day, you may end up going to dinner or just out sight seeing and you want to be still comfortable, but also show your own personal style as well!
