I love doing vintage looks, but I've always found my best source material online, just keep poking around.
No visuals, but good descriptions here: www.freebeautytips.org/1930s-styles.html and this book at Amazon looks interesting: www.amazon.com/Power-Glam...0517703769 hope this helps! Liz www.lizdungate.com |

I found this book at the library and had a copy made, and then stuck it online in case anyone ever needed period advice. Yay! S<3 |

Ahh it was no problem at all. I really wanted to buy a copy but after searing on Amazon and discovering how pricey it was, I was like, "helllllllzz no, I'll just make a copy". So, that's why the pictures are a bit fuzzy (copy of a copy and all), so if anybody needs any help with what some of the words are, let me know.

My advise is to study, study, study. Each decade has distinct look, and in the years from 20's thru to 50's, its all about the brow shape, and lip shape. I can turn on the Classic Movie Channel and in 5 secs, tell what yr it was made in just from the brows and lips. Remember that when they made films in those days, they weren't trying to replicate anything as it was all new to them, so the looks were current.
Think 20's - Clara Bow and Louise Brooks..Bow shaped lips 30's - Marlene Dietrich, Jean Harlow...pencil thin brows 40's - Joan Crawford a classic...she invented that look..heavier brows, and lips looking like she's snarling...and red, red, red. 50's - Sophia Loren, Elizabeth Taylor. Tick shaped brows, with lips to match. And on this look, don't forget the heavy liquid eyeliner on the top. and bottom, with a 'flick' out from the outer corner. Just my 2 cents Good luck with those chiselled lips! Mandy |

I dont know if its still in Print but i've had to do A LOT of 30-40's makeup over the last 4 months, but there's a book about Max Factor that has a ton of great images from 1920-1960 (i think 1960) Just look at the library thats where I found it.

Dita Von Teese has a book called "Burlesque: Art of the Teese" and she goes through beauty tips from the 20's-50's including types of products to achieve that look, even for a manicure! It has beautiful pictures. You can buy it at your local barnes and nobles or borders or . here
Hope this helps! -Rebecca |

Yeah, I can finally contribute something instead of just asking questions!
The first few films I did were 30's and 40's period films so I did a ton of research on the makeup and hair styles of those eras. I purchased several books and one of the best finds is this gorgeous "coffee table worthy" book titled, "Hollywood Goddesses" by Michael Moellering. It's published by Mallard Press Ny, NY in 1989. I don't think think this book has been in print for awhile but I did find a mint condition used copy on either amazing or half.com It's a big portfolio sized book, all in black and white and features just about every major actress from the 20's through the 50's. The pictures are large and shows the makeup and hair details amazingly well. If you can find a copy of this book I think it's a definite must have for any makeup artist (hair and stylists too!).
