Wrong Powder? |
Lead | ||
|
I did a fashion show Saturday night. One of the togs has already posted the pictures, I'm looking thru and one of the girls I did looks so *BLEEPIN* shiny! I powedred her a bazzillion times. Am I using the wrong kind? I have Laura Merceir translucent loose powder.
Thanks Nikki

Is that the one that has a slight "sparkle" to it? I would think that because of it's light reflecting qualities, it would appear "shiney". If it's not the one I'm thinking of, then sorry!

The LM transparent powder should be fine. I am wondering what you used for moisturizer, foundation, etc. Maybe she was sweating?

No - no sparkle to it. I used cetephil (I think - LOL) or Shiseido I honestly can't remember. and CS foundation. I powdered her right before she went out too. Hmm maybe sweating but I don't think? Maybe moisturizer like you said.

Yeah I think it was your Cetaphil - it is grease-city in my opinion. I would go with little to no moisturiser especially for something as hectic as a show. Maybe just a primer like NARS or LM. Maybe try some anti shine too.

^^^ Wow. I use Cetaphil moisturizer all the time.
Why couldn't you see the shine as it was happening? Is this something you only saw in photographs? *I* coined the phrase "Test Up" dagnabit!

Re: Wrong Powder? | #7 | ||
Quote: Werd, I read that and that's why I asked if the shine was JUST on the pictures 'cause that sounds like some type of product reaction and since I use both Cetaphil and CS I'm just curious. This brings me to my real point (for the OP): Just reading what was used on a given job is just part of the puzzle. Being a pro artist, IMO, is technique not product (I'm so tired of the "If I just have this or that product I'm a real artist" attitude... ). So I don't know why the issue you had may have happened because I don't know how you applied your product and that may have been the issue. so without more info, - Tania *I* coined the phrase "Test Up" dagnabit!

i choose moisturizer by what the skin needs to so that I can minimize the shine factor....

You are right Margina.
I have 3 different kinds in my kit: Kheil's Ultra Kheil's Sodium PCA Oil Free And a really light one, that is a lot like cetafil. If you are starting out with a model who has slick skin to begin with and then adding moisturizer on top of that AND cinema secrets (which is a siliconey cream) I am not surprised that the model was shiny. Now did you use any kind of shimmer on her? Like a bronzer with sparkles? That could also be another reason. Now if my scenario was what happened. I would have used blotting papers, before I powedered. And if she was still shiny, I would have strategically placed some Anti-Shine. |

Yes just in the picture she looked super shiny. Maybe my techinque was off, but I've never had this problem before.
Tania - I completely agree wtih you - technique not product!!! I will def. switch the moisturizer. Raymond - www.imagineifphotography..../gm070519/ Picutes 24 & 82 - its the smae girl, but I did powder her again before she went out the second time. Margina - I do that too - I actually ask them what type of skin and any allergies before I know which to choose. And no bronzer or shimmer powder. Thanks you guys rock! Nikki

Wow, she is shiney...
It looks to me like she has oily skin. I would have something completly oil free foundation wise. Same goes for your powder, is it oil free? Did you apply it with a puff or a brush? Did you use anything light reflective on her? It looks to me like the shine skinlights can give off if you apply it wrong. |

She's not shiny she's oily.
To me it seems like she has oily skin to begin with, topped with a moisturizer that's too rich AND an oil-based foundation. Pair that with a first walk out, where she's probably pretty nervous and a little flushed and there you go. Shine city. On shows like this, where you have little time to begin with, I skip anything that could possibly cause shine. Clean face, possibly with astringent if she is oily, anti-shine on top of that and the thinnest layer of oilfree base I can get away with. Keep everything as dry as possible. Monique Heijboer

Thanks Monique - this was my first show. I'll get some astringent and def. will do that for all girls. Normally I'd just use a wipe, but I will UPGRADE! LOL Thanks guys!!!!!

How long did the show last?
Was is quick like most shows, or did it drag on? Because that could also be a factor. But, I will tell you, if you don't already have blotting papers (or toilet seat covers) get some. that would have def helped you out of this jam a little better. |

No it was quick. I have blot papers, but right before and in between changing I powdered her - abd she didn't look like that when she walked away from me. Maybe it was the moist. which I'm thinking was the blue Shiseido.

Re: Wrong Powder? | #18 | ||

I didn't elaborate why in my original post, but I am obsessed with skincare so that is why I went directly do the moisturizer situation.
If the skin isn't dry you don't need to moisturize much, if at all. The skin can only absorb so much and moisturizing an additional time during the day isn't normal for most of us. Sometimes if the skin looks dry it could actually be dead skin cells on the surface - try rubbing moisturizer in and it won't get through the dead skin, then you have a case of oilyness. This is when exfoliation is needed, not moisturizer. Anyway this is a whole other story...but that was where I was coming from. T |

^^^ Tasleema, that's starting to go in the direction of where I was going with "technique" but then I realised I charge for makeup lessons so.. yeah...
What I will say is A) CS is wax based not oil based (Carnuba is the 2nd or 3rd ingredient) and B) it looked in that picture like you were quite heavy-handed. A little goes a long way, particularly when dealing with talent with oily skin. C) "dust" powdering with a brush is often ineffective. Ankywhoo... - Tania *I* coined the phrase "Test Up" dagnabit!
