Hey all,

I can't decide if we pulled this off or not. The model is gorgeous and I have worked with her before, but, I don't know if she suits this kind of look. What do you think? They haven't been retouched yet, I know it needs some cleaning up...

Also, if I do use one shot in my book, I don't know if it is going to look funny as I don't typically do this type of makeup. Since it is one shot and not a story... I dunno, I appreciate any feedback, as always!

of the 3, I like the 2nd one the best.. mainly because I don't think the hairstyle goes... but I'm not sure if the eye technique goes with the lips.

I'm curious to see what others think.

Hmmmm, I see that now, thank you. I think I would crop out the hair anyway, it wasn't meant to be in the shot...

And this is why, even if you and the photographer agree it's not going to be in the shot, the hair should always be 'done'. Raked back and clean gives the photographer freedom of framing and guarantees you've more options to choose from.

i think the black rimmed eyes are just a little too much for that strong of a lip...her skin looks pretty though

Yes, I am learning that now... I ususally work with a hair stylist, so, I'm not used to paying attention to these things nor do I know how to do that much with the hair. I hate doing hair, honestly, but sometimes I have to do it ughhhh, Im learning..

the first thing I noticed was the hair, but that's already been said. I'm going to have to be honest and say that the blue lip does nothing for me. When folks are doing edgy, EVERYTHING has to be in place - model, hair, styling and absolutely most of all (IMO) the photography. The mood of the photography says nothing to what's happening on the model's face.

Since the hair has been commented on, I won't bother to mention that, but also too, something to keep in mind and piggybacking off of what Tania said: This is not the type of model that lends herself to an 'edgy' shoot. Based on those 2 things alone, I would say that it wasn't pulled off. Good job on the skin though!

Exactly ! always go with your gut. If you think it's not gonna work, it usually doesn't. The skins its just flawless and buttery great job on that. If you really wanted to use one of these I'd go with the second one, Crop out her eyes and just focus on the lips and jewlery, and with post just clean up the lip line a tiny bit. just the lip shot will work it would work even more if the lips were a bit more glossy, but thats just my personal preferance.

Thanks everyone, I really appreciate it. Chris, you're so right, I should have stuck with my gut. The good news is, I got some great images this day before we did this look. It was also a challenge for me as an artist, as I don't typically do this type of makeup, so.... I tried per a request of the photographer. I needed another pair of eyes to see if there was any salvaging it. LOL Yet another great lesson learned and made clear with the generous help of my senior artists!

Oh, and that skin is my beloved MUFE HD

skin is wonderful! beautiful job on application! I gotta try that MUFE HD soon!! I am totally jealous! I like the idea of cropping to showcase the lip and would have the photographer clean up the blue lip color that rubbed off onto the silver chain too.

i think you have one shot only and that is cropping to a mouth shot in the second image..... i've said it many times here, match your makeup to the model...you get stronger images that way....

While cropping would be your best option, there isn't a dynamic enough expression in the mouth. I say use this as a learning experience and try again.

I have to agree with Blushun...The lipstick color, to me, cheapens the jewelry. Also, the fact that its such a strong lip which is where the eyes focus on first, the lip line should
be impeccable.
As everyone else said, the skin is beautiful. =)

Nice make up, but I think model is very commercial pretty for this kind of look. But yes some creative cropping should do the trick. Good job.

Just a little note, I think photographer has misled you about this not being retouched (or model has very interesting natural blur and unusual pore patterns), regardless, nice skin

Lovely work on the skin, although I agree that it doesn't look completely unretouched to be honest.

For this kind of work you would really need an edgier looking model AND edgier lighting.
She's a beautiful, commercial girl and great for a beauty/jewelry story, but the blue lip just doesn't work with this imo.

Chris made a very good suggestion about the crop, but beware of her teeth. They look very blue/grey to me now.

Thanks V! Hmmmm, interesting about the retouching, now that you mention it.... it does look a little blurred in spots...?? I wonder what's up with that? If he did retouch and blur, why didn't he blur the whole area... ??

I think I'm just going to chalk this up to a learning experience, I did get some great shots before we attempted this look, so, no big. It was an experience it itself for me to just *DO* a makeup like this as I would never have done it if the photographer did not request it...
