Well, perhaps I interpreted Mary's post differently. To me, the point of the story isn't how much "X" costs specifically or being fixated on the amount of $9000. We could all nit-pick (you can get the promos cheaper than $700, the kit will probably be more than $1000, etc.).

However, I interpreted Mary's advice to be more mindful in general, of how you invest your money in this career, particularly when first starting out. That's great advice and I think it's hecka true. I was horrible horrible horrible about deciphering what I wanted versus what I needed when I first started out and I wasted all types of money. Money that could have been used towards the purchase of good portfolios or promos once I finally got good prints or whatever. There's a section in the Career Guide that is a worksheet outlining what it'll probably cost to be in business the first year for an artist. When I read that list in the 1st edition of the Guide, that was the first time I did anything in the zip code of budgeting and planning. And that was 4 years into me calling myself a "professional" artist (I wasn't).

I think it's very true that folks - myself included when I first started - get very caught up in thinking about the short term but don't see the full picture of what it takes to build a successful career. That's good advice at any time.

(And clearly I scored with "makeupwerks" cause I got it on my first try so I never paid more than $35/year for it. In a market dominated by agencies, it sounds like an agency. People have commented on what a great name it is. I scored. WooHoo! )
